If anxiety keeps you from getting care, you’re not alone. Many patients postpone essential treatment because of fear, a strong gag reflex, or previous difficult experiences. Sedation dentistry offers a calm, controlled way to receive the care you need—often in fewer visits. Here’s how we keep you safe, who qualifies, and what to expect before, during, and after your appointment.
Sedation calms the nervous system and lowers the body’s stress response. As a result, you’ll feel more relaxed, time seems to pass quickly, and your gag reflex is often reduced. Meanwhile, your dentist can work more efficiently, which may shorten overall treatment time and minimize the number of visits. Learn more on our Sedation Dentistry page.
Your safety is our top priority. We review your medical history, medications, and allergies, and we coordinate with your physician if needed. On the day of treatment, we monitor oxygen saturation, heart rate, and blood pressure throughout the procedure. We use reversal agents and emergency protocols that meet or exceed state guidelines. Most importantly, doses are tailored to your health profile—sedation is never one-size-fits-all.
You may be a great candidate if you:
We’ll screen for conditions that may affect sedation choices, such as sleep apnea, pregnancy, uncontrolled hypertension, or certain drug interactions. If sedation isn’t right for you, we’ll build a non-sedation comfort plan with extra numbing, breaks, and desensitization techniques.
With nitrous, expect a light, floaty sensation and easier breathing. With oral sedation, you’ll feel drowsy and calm; many patients nap lightly. You’ll still respond to voices and gentle guidance. Afterward, plan quiet time at home while the effects fully wear off.
We confirm comfort, administer local anesthetic for pain control, and start sedation according to plan. Continuous monitoring keeps everything on track. If at any point you need a pause or adjustment, we respond right away.
With nitrous, recovery is fast. With oral sedation, you’ll go home with your driver and post-op instructions. Expect mild drowsiness the rest of the day. We’ll schedule follow-ups as needed and check that you’re healing well.
